Curricular offerings in music at St. George’s Collierville campus (grades 6-12) include a modern music ensemble created and designed to give students unique experiences in music with regional roots such as blues, country, jazz, rock 'n roll, funk, soul, and rockabilly. St. George’s also offers middle and upper school jazz bands, as well as middle and upper school mixed choirs. The two lower school campuses offer musical specialty classes at all grades, as well as after-school opportunities in voice, guitar, piano, etc.
St. George’s Independent School’s Modern Music Ensemble recently placed itself on the musical map with a nod from the 2017 DownBeat Magazine Student Music Awards. Recordings submitted by the St. George’s Modern Music Ensemble received an Outstanding Performance Award in the magazine's June 2017 issue.
DownBeat Magazine, one of the world's leading jazz and contemporary music publications, presents the Student Music Awards annually. Students and educators nominate themselves in an open call for recorded performances and applications. More than 1,000 entries were submitted across all categories this year.
The DownBeat Student Music Awards are considered the most prestigious awards in jazz education. Founded in 1976, hundreds of musicians, music educators and music industry professionals received their first international recognition as DownBeat Student Music Award winners. At least six winners have gone on to appear on the cover of DownBeat Magazine as professional artists. Scores of past winners have been featured in the magazine and have won either Critics or Readers Poll honors. Even before young musicians become professionals, the awards have helped them garner more than $10 million in scholarship opportunities. Among the most notable DownBeat winners is multi-Grammy winner Norah Jones.
Through school connections, the Modern Music Ensemble has also recorded original music at Archer Records and Ardent Studios in Memphis.
